8/16/05 Update
Friends,
Rick's day did not start out great today as he was very sick and not feeling at all like a birthday boy. Unfortunately, he has developed a case of fungal pneumonia. This is fairly normal, due to the fact that his immune system is compromised and they are already treating him for it. His Bilirubin levels only went down half a point today, but the doctor elected not to do the liver biopsy anyway. Please continue to pray for his levels to go down and for the healing of the pneumonia. Rick finally has internet access in his room and is SO enjoying reading all of the comments that you're all posting. He's not quite up to responding, but please know that he reads every single one and is so encouraged. Keep them coming! We'll continue to update you via these blogs and the main portion of the website. Thank you for your prayers!

Rick,
You have always been such and encouragement to me with your worship of our great God. I am so sorry to hear about what is going on with you and will be praying for you and your family.
And, since you have always inspired me with music - Jeremy Camp's Walk by Faith:
Will I believe you when you say, your hand will guide my every way. Will I receive the words you say, every moment of every day. I will walk by faith even when I cannot see, because this broken road prepares your will for me.
Help me rid my endless fears, you've been so faithful for all my years with one breath you made me new, your grace covers all I do. I will walk by faith even when I cannot see, because this broken road prepares your will for me.
Well I'm broken BUT I still see your face. Well you've spoken pouring your words of grace. I will walk by faith even when I cannot see, because this broken road prepares your will for me.
Hallelujah.
You will be in my prayers.

Rick,
I just wanted to say that our family is thinking of you. We are so sorry to hear about the lukemia but want to encourage you and let you know that we have had several people that we know go through what you are going through and they have now passed the test and continue to live on -strong and healthy again! God truly does heal!
Despite the illness, please have a happy, blessed birthday and look forward to having so many more to come!
I also wanted to tell you that my cousin had visited our church back in the early part of the year and was so amazed by the music and your singing talent - she was stunned! She had never known that church could be so wonderful and fun! She even went on to say recently that she STILL couldn't find a church in her home town that had anyone as talented and truly gifted! She was really touched by the music and the service. I'm sure that you have heard that you have made an impact on people's lives, but please know that your musical gift touched someone who couldn't be touched and though they don't live around here, it was a step in opening their hearts to God - thank you!!!
You are in our hearts and prayers, please get well soon!

Dear Rick,
Our family is praying for you. We all miss you at church and pray that God will heal your body. We know that He is in control and He is with you at every moment. We also pray for strength for your family and fiance as they stay with you.
As I read through a devotion before school this morning, I thought of you. Deuteronomy 31:6 says "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
We can't wait to hear your awesome voice in church again. But until then, rest and get well. We will continue to pray that you gain strength. We love you and if there is any thing we can do for you, please let us know.

Hey hon! I know a lot has happened in both of our lives since the last time we saw each other but when I heard what was going on with you, my heart sank. First of all I had no idea you were living in Atlanta... OMG so am I! Heath got stationed at NAS Atlanta last May. We actually live in Kennesaw, but we're still a part of the "Atlanta-Metro Area." So I am so sorry that I haven't been to hear you sing at your church. When you are well we are definately gonna come see you. I just wanted to let you know that we are praying for you and we have our church friends and neighbors all praying too. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

I heard John Piper say once that he was preacing a message on the holiness of God. He had no idea the impact that it would have on the young couple that had just lost their very young daughter. After the services they came up to Piper and said thanks for going through this series. We took our eyes off of our circumstance and put our eyes on the holiness of God. Rick God works ALL things to the good of those who love him and are called according to His purpose. If you love him and are called, he is working your good. It may not seem that way but I promise he is. (PSALM 92) Lord give Rick joy in the mornings like moses prayed

I learned of Rick's condition this weekend. Needless to say, no words adequately express the confusion and distress I first felt. While God's touch sometimes seems distant and faint...His presence and power are real an incomparable and through the weekend, I am overwhelmed with the hope of God raising Rick as an awesome trophy to His grace and love. I praise God for the blessing of another day and the hope that we all feel.
Mine, and my families (Lori, Caleb and Sammy) are with Rick and with all who share the joy of knowing Rick and worshiping with Rick. As devastating as Rick's illness is, God is bigger and I am praying for Him to heal. I look forward to standing in the audience and singing (OK lip syncing) along with Rick in worship.
Rick, thank you for demonstrating and having the heart of a servant.

We have prayerfully been following this time of trial you are presently experiencing.
From the numerous updates lovingly posted by Shannon and Jeff, and too, all the posts from so many concerned folks...there is no doubt a host of dedicated and hope filled prayers being lifted up to Him on your behalf.
As we ready ourselves to attend tonight's Married Life Live, our thoughts and prayers are focussed on you...and especially this evening as the Worship Team sings and plays of His Glory, there is no doubt that most there will be joined in prayer for your recovery.

Candi,
You don't know me but my family has enjoyed your gift of music at NPCC for a few years now. We have close friends who know Rick from Mtn. Lake. Our family had an experience 5 yrs. ago with our son that placed us in that same space you are in.When one is focused on God as you & your family are, you are truly walking on Holy Ground...you are in a different plane of existence than you've ever been...and it is God's grace carrying you. You are so right that you have many things to thank God for. Many have witnessed God being glorified through Rick's illness, as you described those drawn to him for reasons inexplainable to them. We know the power of the Holy Spirit that is unsurpassed by any other. So, even though this is a dark time for your family, you are abiding under the shadow of the Almighty (Ps. 91:1), exactly where you need to be. I join the thousands who are praying for Rick's restoration, and I know you feel and have already seen the results of intercessory prayer. Love, Kim Hays

Dear Rick and family,
We had a move of God at church tonight! The service started out somewhat ordinary. But then the choir started singing a song called, "He Made the difference." It's not really the kind of song you'd think of as a song that necessarily would make you want to shout, altough it's a good fun song, and we all like it, including me. It's a song that has some soul to it if you know what I mean.
Anyway, we started singing it. The first time we sang it, nothing unusual happened. But then as sometimes is the case, Pastor asked us to sing it again. This song has some really high tennor notes. I was already kind of hoarse (ma-a-ay), just wanted to be funy and make you all laugh. Besides being hoarse I had no mints or anything in my pocket for my throat to help me sing.
So when he said to sing it again, I was like, "Oh no." But then when we started to sing part of it again, I don't think it was five seconds into the song when suddenly the powr of God hit like lightening!!!!!!!
Two ladies in the choir began shouting to the top of thier lungs. It's been a long time since I've heard anyone in our church shout like that. Suddenly the power of God hit everyone. People in the worship team began shouting like that and speaking in tongues and people in the congregation started doing it too.
Up until that point I was as dry as a desert, but when the power of God hit, it rolled all over me too!!!!!!!
Pastor had asked a guest speaker to preach. If he hadn't have asked him to preach, I don't think Pastor would have preached!
You should hvae heard the guest speaker's sermon. It would have been right down your alleys. He spoke from Ezekiel on the scripture that says, "the hand of the Lord was upon me there." He really emphasized the word there. He said that no matter what your situation, the hand of the Lord is upon you there!
Also, as the power of God was moving like a Niagra falls, I thought about Ricky and prayed that he would feel the same thing we were feeling. A man who is in the choir told me after I told him that, that he was thnking the same thing, that Ricky was probably getting healed!
Also, I believe another confirmaiton of Rick's healing is that our new youth pastor said in his dismisal prayer the words, "Just to be close to You!"

I am so glad to hear things are at least heading in a positive direction. It is great to know specifics.
My daughter went to Spin (Mountain Lakes middle and high school ministry) last night. They played some of Rick's music. She said it was great but everyone was really sad for a little while. She checks this website every day to check on Rick.
This website was such a great idea. I am glad it is uplifting for the family and cannot wait for Rick to read them all.
Take care and as always, let me (us) know if there is anyting I (we) can do.

Ricky, God is so good. You are always on my mind and in my prayers. You are a true inspiration for everyone. You showed students, faculty, and staff what a Christian should be while in high school. Your life since then has been a wonderful example of God's mercy and goodness. Kelly said to tell you hi, and that she hopes and prays for your recovery.

Dear Rick,
my name is Erin Cornett and I live in Savannah, Ga.
I am 15 years old and this past summer was my third summer at Bigstuf. You and Candy made a huge interruption {a good one!} in my life last year and I just wanted you to know that ya'll are a big part of the reason that I am a christian.
I love to sing and I actually go to a school that helps me inprove my voice, and seeing you up on that stage and being so passionate about what you do, made me want to glorify God even more and share that with everyone, so hopefully, in a few years, I'll be on that stage at Bigstuf.
I have been praying for you and your family and I hope that you get well soon. You have made such a big change in my life and many others and I know we are all praying for you. I cant wait to see you back on your feet, and I hope you never forget that God is in control of your life and he will pull you through if it is HIS will.

Rick,
I know my husband had posted a note to you all before, I just wanted to let you guys know that our entire family is on our knees for you all. Our son and brother went through almost 4 years of treatment for Leukemia, it had it's ups and downs, it wasn't easy, you see they have to make you very sick to be able to cure you. Always keep focused on the prize. Our son is now 5 and a half years from diagnosis, he plays guitar also. We feel your pain. God bless you all and keep you strong.

My sweet little Rick, running through my house, wrestling with Josh and Jared, playing with Sara Beth, and so very much a part of this family. Tears fill my eyes with each memory of your sweet disposition as I see you in my heart laughing at Josh or Jared, something you did all the time. You guys were cousins and that made you especially close. (not real close in kin) but close in heart and love for each other. It was always obvious. You three never let go of each other and that is so priceless especially to Josh right now.
Rick, We are so very heartfelt sorry that you are sick. Elaine, Billy, candice,Haley and Suzanne, I know that there are no words to say that can help, as you watch over sweet Rick, your baby boy, and your brother but somehow I was just praying that you would sense in this email that we truly care and hurt deeply for all of you.
We serve an awesome God who is faithful in all His ways. We are holding the ropes for you. Don is opening the church for prayer and fasting this week for Rick.
Love you much,
Sara Davis

Rick and Family, We continue to pray for Rick's strength so that he can start to get better. I also pray for the family to take care of themselves so that you are able to take care of Rick. It is so hard to leave him right now but remember that he so needs for each of you to also take care of yourselves. I can only imagine how tough this is on you all. Prayer will keep you going!
Thank you again for taking the time to put all of the updates on this site for us to read. It surely is helpful as we wish we could be there by your side to help you through this. I know the strongest imaginable person is right by your side though. Believe in Him!
